Default Noise!

Video attached, (sorry for the vertical video syndrome).

At first I thought my differential was causing the noise. While going down the road, the car makes a "scratching" sound that echos off objects as I go by. It's quite horrible.. and it's not the clutch.

Well I finally found where it's coming from. It's right by where the drive shaft meets the transmission. It also looks like the shaft may be out of balance? Any help is appreciated! I've been having nothing but problems with this car, unfortunately.

EDIT: Ended up being the tail/secondary shaft bearings.

Came across these threads:

https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/691...g-replacement/

https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/409...whining-noise/

I'm going to assume they had similar issues.

if your drive shaft was out of balance, i would figure there would be quite a wicked vibration you would feel.

good luck

Try taking the drive shaft off (TRANSMISSION SIDE) and see if you can replicate the noise. Looking at the video it seems something came out of where the driveshaft meets the tranny. Yeah with it being out of balance youd be noticing vibration more than anything not noise. Plus how would it become off balance in the first place. Do that before having the tranny get a rebuild!

looks like the shaft. just replace it with a new one, shouldnt be too expensive but time consuming depending on if you have the right tools. Good luck!

The sound is definitely coming from the transmission casing. I pinpointed it towards the tail shaft using a stethoscope. The drive shaft does look a little beat up, though. It looks scraped up to the right of the bolts.

Update:

I had the tail shaft bearings replaced and the sound is gone. It is now 100% quiet. I replaced 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 in the diagram below.

I also had the old clutch replaced with a new OEM Exedy which solved my clutch buzz, (for the next few thousand miles I'm sure).

Hope this helps anyone!

Getting that faint trans wine wile under throttle and rotational shaft/bearing noise when out of gear in neutral/idle and revving up the engine. Hoping this is the secondary shaft bearing so I can just remove the tail with trans in place and resolve. Ive got a track day coming up this weekend, wish me luck it holds together long enough to do this and get home!

Did you ever determine what your issue was? I have a whine in neutral/idle and revving as well and don't know what the issue is.

@Billman250 Do you have any idea what this could be?
