Noise from rear end
Ok, I am not looking for a diagnosis per se, only trying to find out if the noise I am hearing has ever been associated with a differential problem.
Today I noticed a noise from the rear end when under acceleration. Might be present all the time, but it stands out under accel. The best I can explain it in text is "ssshhhhhh". It sounds a lot like the noise you make if you rub your hand across a piece of paper that is flat on a table. No whine, no clunk. It is not directly affected by road speed or rpms.. only acceleration. Has anyone ever heard this noise coming from a diff under accel? It was raining by the time I got to work, and I peeked under the rear briefly just to satisfy my curiosity.. didn't see any leak from the diff.
Now, I seem to hear a new noise from my S every few weeks and I am pretty paranoid since I am tuned into a lot of noises this car makes.. however I am also sensible and always chalk it up to being a normal noise that I just never heard before, and nothing has broken yet
So this could very well be the same. Hell it could just be road/tire noise (I DID just put on my S02s again, but I don't remember hearing this for the 1st 3 days).
If a diff has never told you to shutup (SHHHHHH), let me know.. thats the only thing back there that I am worried about. I've never heard of this coming from a diff from any car in all my years as a gearhead, but who knows.. I never heard such a loud clutch before either
is this the longest post about nothing?

Yup, me nither. The more I listened on the way back from work, the more I think its coming from the tranny. I'll just chalk this up on the list of tranny noises.
I also found a tranny clunk today. happens when I do the following sequence while stopped: Disengage clutch. Shift tranny into 2nd gear. Put tranny back into neutral. Engage clutch. CLUNK! couldn't reproduce it with any other gear. strange ..
clearly something is causing the clunk from being abruptly set into motion when the tranny starts spinning after it contacts the clutch.. just think its weird that it happens only after being in second gear then shifting back into neutral. eminates from the very front of the tranny near the clutch
