Default normal oil consumption

Some say 1000 miles and you add a quart. Some say no oil use and others say some is normal.
I have this car since day one, it has used 0 oil, meaning that the mark on the dipstick does not move between changes enough to merrit adding any. In fact no oil use in my opinion is normal.

Now i usually shift at about 3500 rpm, go into vtec at least twice when I drive. down shift up to 4000 rpm.

which car do you have?
How much oil do you use?
what type of oil do you use?
how many miles?

04 ap2
71000 miles
chevron 10/30 from costco bought by the case...usually an official honda filter. and i don't always change the crush washer!
usually i change the oil every 6 months or 3500miles.

It's the AP1s that typically burn. Sometimes synthetic makes it work. As for what is normal that depends how you drive. I'm at ~.75 quart every 1k miles. If mostly freeway .5 quarts.

2001 with 123k miles, running stock engine.

I've never had to add oil between changes on my '04.

I usually drive pretty conservatively (not much vtec), I shift between 4-5k.

Car: 2003
Oil burn: .5-.75 qts per 1000 miles
Oil used: Castrol GTX High mileage 10-30
Miles: 99k

Its cause you have an ap2. I have an ap1 and I use about 1.7 quarts every 3000+ miles. I use Castrol 10w-30 or Valvoline 10w-30. The car is a daily driver, I rarely use V-tec and never redline. My shifts are usually at 4,000-5,000 rpm and once a week I cruise at about 85-100mph for 30 miles.

I daily drive, half highway and half city, shift at 5k if I'm driving conservatively, redline 1st and 2nd every chance I get, VTEC engaged often.

01 AP1, owned since 48,000 miles, original engine, previous owner replaced clutch at 37000 miles.
137,000 miles, lifetime MPG is 25.75.
Add about a quart every 1500 miles, very consistent through the last 89,000 miles.
Mobil 1 0W30. No difference in oil consumption when I tried Amsoil, Castrol, Royal Purple, etc.

Consumption will vary so much between engines, oil, and driving conditions that it will be very difficult to call one rate normal.

I have found that my consumption was higher when I used Mobil One and have changed to other synthetics. I now use various 10W30 full synthetics and consumption has stabilized to about one quart every 3-5K miles. This is with 70K miles on an AP1 and a mix of driving that includes some hours of pushing in VTEC but mostly normal city/highway driving.

Some use may have to do with initial break-in of the engine. Even when I tracked the car my car and others I talked with did not have any notable oil use in 250 miles of full out driving in an event. Too many variables to get any number other than broad generalizations.

AP1 F20s will burn about a quart every 1,000 mi of normal driving and people will check oil levels after a day of hard driving. They burn oil, so it's normal. Many AP1 owners keep extra oil in the trunk.

F22s don't burn oil due to the revisions Honda made. As well, I believe these same revisions were adopted by 2004+ F20 engines (Europe, Japan) so they wouldn't burn oil any more.

As far as oils go, Mobil1 does not seem to do well in our engines.

And OP, you should try shifting around 4-5k and your OCI are way too frequent IMO. Get a Blackstone UOA and you will see you are wasting money on overly frequent oil changes.

If you don't mind explaining what were the revisons Honda made in 2004? It sounded like it was not just f20 to f22.

I think from what I read Honda used a different process in honing the cylinders
