oil change?
reading the service book that came with the car i assume that the first oil change is at 7500 miles... am i correct? i am at 4500 and i am worried... what if i am mistaken.

I changed mine to Redline synthetic at 4500 when I was sure that the engine was no longer burning oil.
I think it is a rule of thumb that you can change your oil at about 4000 and much earlier to dino oil.
There's supposed to be something in the oil that came with the car to help break in but I'm pretty sure you don't have to keep it till 7000.
Do a search and you will find TONs of threads on this.

For your 2nd oil change I would not go to a synthetic yet. IMHO.
There are tons of oil related topics here - do some searching and you will be amazed how much this has been debated.
At 4,500 miles you have nothing to worry about, but I would get it done soon.

You might notice in your manual that the "extreme" interval is just after 3k miles. I would *always* follow this schedule if you want your vehicle to last. As such, 3k mile oil changes are not that far out of Honda's recommendation. I'd do the first by 3k with conventional, then conventional for the second, then synthetic (if you choose) for the rest.
BE SURE TO WATCH YOUR OIL LEVEL!!! It's not unheard of to burn a quart or more within 3k miles. You don't want to be more than a quart down, EVER!
Here's my summary notes . . . . more than you ever wanted to know, I'm sure:
Break-In Oil
per Honda owners manual: Replace oil at 7,500 miles unless you drive in severe conditions. Severe is defined as short trips of 5 miles or less, hot weather of 90 degrees or more, lots of stop and go driving, mountain driving, and/or muddy, dusty, or de-iced roads. Replace oil at 3,750 miles if you meet these.

well i checked my oil this morning while the oil was chilly and the dip stick read empty. oh man oh man. i have checked it furiously but never cold... and it always read full.
so i went out and bought 10w 30 mobile synthetic and put 1 quart in, it now reads almost full. one 'x' below full. do you think that that is alright? 4 parts factory oil, 1 part synthetic at 4800 miles??

The quart of synthetic should not damage anything, and is better than nothing. The synthetic will slow down the "break in" slightly, but I can tell you from experience that changing to synthetic as early as 200 miles will not cause any problems.
1 quart low isn't *that* bad. It's certainly not good, but under normal driving conditions should cause any problems. Be sure to check the level cold, look at the driver's side (underside) of the stick, and make sure it's full. When thrashing the car on a track, be SURE that you are full.
If you EVER see the oil light, shut the car down immediately. Let the engine cool 20 minutes and check the oil level. Usually, when the light comes on, damage is imminent if it has not already occurred.
