Default Oil change before winter.

Heyas,

I usually change the oil before garaging the car for winter. I haven't done it yet and it seems like there could be snow (and where there is snow, there is salt) soon. The oil (Amsoil signature series 5w30) turned a year old and i've put probably around 2000kms on it since it was changed. Would you be concerned about changing it next spring instead of this fall? I'm not sure I want to run the car on salty roads...

Regards,

trep

I could be wrong but wouldn't it be better to change the oil after winter? If the oil sits there for too long it will get old and that's no good at all.

I don't think that clean oil siting in the pan will create an issue. And besides it's only for a couple of months not years.

I'm confused...why would you have to run the car on salty roads to change the oil?

Can't you warm it up where it is parked and change it there?

^He probably wants to put it in storage and would need to change the oil after warming the car (driving) and likely after changing (more driving). Ideally, he'll want to give the time and heat to burn off the moisture, especially if you're talking about storage.

Personally, I would not worry.

I'm not equipped at all to do that where I live, so I drive it to a garage. In case i can't get to a garage to do the oil change before it snows, I wanted to know if owners would be concerned of not changing the oil before 18 months. First thing that will be done come spring will be a oil change.

I'm not an oil expert but I would say that even though that is some top dollar oil that has very long change intervals... it's still old. And I'm pretty sure old oil without a lot of miles degrades with the moisture that it entrains from sitting, which leads to acidity in the oil and corrosion.

I would change it. Just throw some cheapo oil in there while it sits, IMO.

If the oil is still loaded with additives and detergents, which is very likely, it will be fine.

No need for "pretty sure" answers... They do not tell the truth about oil.

Last I checked, Blackstone charges $25 to run a UOA.

Last I checked, my oil changes are about $30 with filter.

Last I checked, you either have to siphon out the oil using a ~$25-40 pump to get a sample from the valve cover, or you have to change the oil (or drain some from the bottom and plug it quick if that's your fancy.

I just do math.
