Default Oil Consumption.

I just picked up my 2002 s2000 on May 10th. I have driven approx. 400 miles since i took it home from the dealer.

Today i checked my oil at work and i was 1 full quart low, i know it was at the fill line because i bought it from a honda dealer and checked it before i left.

Oil consumption is normal, especially on a Honda..but 1 quart in 400 miles seems to be a bit too much.

Thanks for reading!

The dipstick is really inconsistent at least for me. Try to do a cold reading and go by the side on the dipstick that faces the drivers side, I find it to be more consistent. I dont think your car can consume that much oil in 400 miles.

The dipstick can be tricky to read. However, the variances are typically no more than a quarter of a quart. I check my oil in my garage where it's dead level and when the engine is cold. It will read differently when hot (a little high), and will not read accurately when not on a level surface.
It's important to pull out the dipstick, rotate it and read both sides - immediately once it comes out of the engine (check it from the passenger side of the car).

It's full when it reads at the full line on the drivers side of the dipstick (as qbmurderer13 stated) with the exception of the top "v" cutout portion of the top "X". It will typically read ever so slightly above the full line on the passenger side of the stick.
S2000s consume some oil. Every car is a little different. The highest consumption rates are seen in cars that run standard Mobil 1. So if you're running Mobil 1 - try changing to a better oil. My S2000 consumes less than 0.25 qt every 5,000 miles running Amsoil 10W30. On a side note - ensure you use the OEM Honda "PCX" filter.

Honda did the oil change on the day i picked it up. I'm assuming they used Mobil 1 and the car does have a Honda filter.

I guess i'll change over to another oil and log the whole consumption process.

It seems 1 quart over 400 miles is way too much, i do have a full warranty so i'm not too concerned

I would be very surprised if Honda is using M1 for their changes. Back to your original issue. I run M1 in my 2003 and burn about a quart over 3000 miles.

My guess is that they used 5W-20 and the wrong filter. Can you see the part number on the filter and verify the oil used?

I will check the # on the filter. 5-20 is a good guess, they were already closing and the kid was rushing. I'll throw it up at work and do the proper oil change, then log it from there. What oil do you guys suggest?

I burn a 1/2 quart every 1000 miles with amsoil 0-30. Just make sure you check it.
