Default oil consumption

its been just over 3100 miles since my last oil change in which i went from regular oil to amsoil syn. 10w-30 and my car is an 02. i know that this engine consumes oil but since i have changed to oil i have added over 3 qts. i have checked every where for leaks and havent seen any blue smoke. i cant figure out why i am going through so much oil. i do drive aggresively but i dont track my car. btw my car has 61k on it. any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. keith

The PCV valve is on the top of the motor, the little black 90 degree plastic tube that is connected to the intake manifold by a larger than normal vacuum tube. I recently changed mine because I was starting to have to add up to a half a quart every 3000 miles which was up from 0.25 every 5000 miles. I didn't go with the OEM one and my consumption only marginally improved. I'm going with the OEM PCV valve this week. Cold weather can increase consumption during the warm-up phase - depending on how cold it is where you are.

You shouldn't have to add that much oil - especially Amsoil. Has your car ever been treated with any aftermarket additive like Slick 50 or the like in the past? If so - the detergent package in Amsoil may be removing that crap and contributing to consumption. If you're not the first owner - there will be no way to know that unless the previous owner told you about it.

Change the PVC valve, Keep adding oil and consider changing your oil again. I only go a short time between changes if I switched oil brands due to the fact you never get all the old stuff out. If the consumption continues, there may be something else wrong.
Another issue is if you had some shop change your oil for you they may have snagged your Amsoil and put the cheapest crap in your engine. This is not uncommon. How do you know if that happened? Buy a Blackstone oil test kit and ask them to check to see if the oil in your engine was what it's supposed to be. That's one of the main reasons I always change my own oil.

1 quart in that timeframe might be normal but 3 is pretty excessive. Might want to do a compression test and see if anything is out of whack. Mine uses about a quart every 3,000 miles (MY2000) and the compression test just showed it's in good health.

Checking the oil on this car is a bit odd. I started checking the oil after letting the car sit overnight (cold) and to my delight my last 1,000 miles I consumed exactly 1 "X" on the stick. I use 0W-30 mobil 1 syn (chicago winters).

I did a little test the other day:

engine hot, turned off oil check at 5 minutes... 2 Xs from the BOTTOM.
after thirty minutes... 4 Xs from the BOTTOM.
after sitting overnight... 1/2 an X from the TOP.

i change my own oil because i dont trust most mechanics, i dont know if the previous owner added stuff into the oil or not. i will check and possible change the old pcv, and change my oil again soon. if it persists i will do a leak down test and post the results, thanks for all your time
