Default Oil Consumption

MY01 oil is below the the reading mark is it has been less than 2,000 miles on this oil change. I know this topic has been covered over and over again, but my question is will oil be consumped also if it reaches length in time instead of miles?

Details are, the last oil change was with Castrol Edge full syn 10W30 on December of last year 2011. Now it's at 102,xxx and the oil is just beyond the dip stick reading marker and this is a cold read. It's been a full three months but I have only ran the car less than 2,000 miiles. The coloring looks fine and I don't smell or see it.

just below the read mark means just over a quart in a little less than 2,000 miles.

Not bad, really...for an AP1.

I would expect the car to burn more when cold, so if you do a lot of short-distance driving, I'd expect oil consumption to be more.

Oil consumption is a fact of life with AP1s. Just check your oil weekly and top it off when you're down a half quart.

You should check the oil level frequently and always keep the level above the half-way mark on the stick (cold). But don't overfill either.
The owners manual clearly states to check the oil level every fill-up. You should do this until you can determine exactly how much oil your car will burn on average. Your car will consume more if you spend a lot of time in VTEC, especially if your PVC valve is sticking or partially clogged.
AP1s are one of those cars known for oil consumption (some oils more than others - standard Mobil 1 being the worst).

Just so you know - a quart low greatly increases the chances of momentary oil starvation and possible engine damage if you drive the car aggressively (lateral Gs). If you ever see the low oil pressure light, you can bet you've done some damage.

Unless you have the previous owners records, you likely don't know what oil was used prior to you running Castrol Edge. You may want to change the oil again as soon as you're able to ensure all of the prior fill is out of the engine. A mix of different brands can also greatly increase consumption - and deliberately doing so in any quantity is never a good idea. Even a small amount of residual oil (as low as 10% in some tests) left from the previous change can degrade the new fill. This is another in a long list of reasons to avoid establishments that specialize "quick" oil changes.
I believe Billman said he left his drain plug out overnight during an oil change to determine how much oil is left in the engine on a normal oil change (replacing the plug after the vast majority of the oil is drained - when you only have a slow drip coming out of the drain plug). If I remember right, he said about a quarter of a quart drained overnight.
IOW - when you switch from one brand to another during a normal oil change, there's somewhere around 0.25 US quart (about 5% of the total fill) of the old stuff left in there, and it's a good idea to change the oil again soon after the initial drain (1,000 - 1,500 miles or so) to eliminate the rest of the old oil.

If your car still burns oil at the same rate (or worse) after another oil change with Castrol Edge, then you may want to consider another oil.

I have run Amsoil ATM 10W30 since my engine has been broken in and it averages less than 0.2 US qt burned per 3,000 miles... with no measured oil burned over the last oil change. I have a friend with a '00 model year with over 130,000 miles - and his oil burn rate is about the same. He's used Mobil 1 EP 10W30 (Extended Performance) since he bought the car with around 30k miles on the clock.

Once again, if your car likes to consume oil - I would avoid standard Mobil 1 synthetic.

I currently only recommend the OEM PCX filter for the S2000 due to the oil pressures in the F20C.

My dip stick shows the oil lower than all the x's right under the actual reading marker "L". Is this a sign of being out of oil?

no, that's about 1.2 quarts low.

To determine your oil consumption rate, you need to measure it over more miles. Measuring oil level can vary a great deal each time you pull the dipstick. You're also assuming your oil was exactly at the "F" at the oil change under the same circumstances (i.e. warm engine, warm oil, X minutes after you turn the engine off, etc). And your driving habits can have a significant impact on oil consumption.

And I agree - consuming a quart of oil near 2000 miles isn't bad for an AP1.

i burned a lot of oil. about 2 quarts every 1200 miles. i did a number of things and now my ap1 burns no oil
-cleaned pcv valve
-new spark plugs
-new air filter
-and switched to castrol edge titanium.

i've tried many weights/oils and moblie one is the worst. i tried the whole line of mobile one and different weights. the most disappointing is extended miles. said can go for 15000 miles with untill it needs a change. but i ended up changing it at 2500 with 3 quarts left. but castrol edge titanium is running strong. been about 1300 miles and its at the same oil level mark.
