Default Oil consumption concern

I've read several threads/polls on oil consumption for ap2, and I havn't found any apparent pattern or correlation between age (mileage), vtec usage, and types of oil. Some of you guys say you experience zero oil loss with occasional or even frequent vtec, while a small handfull say 1-2 qts between changes even with very little vtec. I'm curious why I'm losing close to 1 qt every 3k miles with only minimal vtec, which is not common on ap2. My 2007 (daily driven) is at 77k miles on mobil1 synthetic 10w30 and I vtec for short durations 1-2 times a week, and I change at ~6k intervals.

Try something other than Mobil 1. If you search you will find many claims of the additive package in mobil 1 burns off more quickly than most, or something to that effect.

I use valvoline syn 5w30 and my 05 engine doesn't lose a drop, from stop and go to highway driving and even at the track. My old f20c burnt mobil 1 like crazy and when I switched to valvoline the difference was huge.

One quart every 3,000 miles isn't bad. That's like adding a quart every 2 to 3 months? I'd just keep an eye on the level and not worry.

Agreed, try a different brand of oil. My AP2 2.2L motor never consumed much Mobil 1, but I had a K20 that went through it like mad. Once I changed to Castrol synthetic, the consumption stopped almost entirely (could go 5,000 miles and not need to top up, vs needing half a qt at 2-3,000 miles). I now use Castrol in the S as well, and lose no more than 5mm on the dipstick between changes.

Yeah switch to a Castrol or Valvolene. Mobil 1 is notorious for being drunk in this engine. Its formula does have a high burn off rate.

Castrol edge with Titanium FST to be specific.

I get a 6 gallon enviro-pack for about 90 bucks on Ebay. Great deal.

I think one of the leading causes of "mine burns vs mine doesn't" conversations may stem from proper break-in done on cars versus not. These cars are old and most of them have previous owners. That info is literally almost the first piece of history for a car and a LOT of people neglect it, mostly out of ignorance. But it can play a large role in the wear on an engine, in my opinion. Especially future oil consumption.

Proper break in can be a real factor.

I happen to have an 09 with 53K on the clock. I change oil every 3K because I like to. The oil level does not change one iota; it might as well be painted on. I use Mobil 1 0W-30. According the Bob is the oil guy, Mobil 1 is a pretty darn good oil. Yes, others are very good also but that is another thread. (A million of them)

The big deal with a synthetic 0W-30 oil is the protection it gives on start up. A 5W or 10W-30 cannot match it. There is more wear on start up than any other time short of oil starvation.

Mobil 1 is the only quality oil I have seen mentioned on the oil guy website (and others) that has the 0W. It is also $25 at Wal Mart.

I have not heard of additives "burning off" (unless there is an engine fire) with M1 but all oils are going to degrade over time and use. If there is, my engine will not suffer with 3K mile changes.

One last thing, my internals are super clean. I will tell you I have never done a UOA on it. Have not tracked it and with the low miles have never really seen a need to up to now.

My '06 doesn't use any oil and I run it out to 7500 miles. If it was my car I'd run a 10/40 high mileage oil like M1 high mileage. I run a M1 mix and it works out to a 5/40 grade but if my engine started to use oil I'd switch over to a high mileage 10/40.
