Oil Cooler Bypass??

Default Oil Cooler Bypass??

In this pic, there is a short hose that is referanced in the Helm manual as the Oil Cooler Bypass hose . There is no other referance to it any place else.

My question is, 1 what is it for? and 2 could it be used to connect addtional sensors for gauges?

coolant flows through those lines. This allows your oil to be water cooled. You could run a water temp. gauge over there but there are better spots like on your intake manifold for that.

Are you sure that Water (coolant) is running there and not Oil?

Ok, Thanks..

If you would not mind. Can you explain why there is a by-pass at all? What would it be there if it was not by-passed? I assumed an Oil cooler. You know, something to cool the oil?

It's cools the oil using water. The water temp is suppose to stay set by the radiator and fans at a safe and constant temp. This bypass just flows the water through the cooler in an attempt to cool down the oil as it flow through the filter. It by-passes the water, not the oil.

Does it really work? Who knows. But i think it should be doing at least something.

Oil have higher boiling point than water. So, yes it is effective in cooling down oil temp.
If you have doubt, find the cars with both water and oil temp. gauge and check out the differences in temp.

The manual says to use the right side engine block plug to do a coolant flush, but as my car has a block heater in that location, I use one of those oil cooler lines to drain the water out of the lower block. I can tell you without doubt that those hoses are filled with coolant. One of those hoses takes the water "into" the oil cooling jacket, the other takes the water "out" of the oil cooler and back into the cooling system.

Those little coolers are quite efficient - liquid to liquid oil coolers are more efficient than liquid to air.

The "cooler" also allows faster warmup.
