My new S2000 of 700 miles has gone through 1 quart of oil already. That bothers me enough, but the second part of this worries me even more. I checked the oil at 500 miles and it was completely full. (All of the 5 stars/diamonds were filled.) I checked it again this morning at 700 miles and all of the 5 stars/diamonds are empty. I threw a qt of 10w-30 non-synthetic in and it was topped off. Does this sound like a problem to anyone?

Oil use is common with the S, especially when the engine is going through break-in. In many cases it subsides over time. It may never go completely away though. Just keep an eye on it.

you have to make sure you check the oil when the engine is warm and level ground. i.e. right after you fill the gas up. If you check it cold you may get far different readings then when warm.

I have 48K on my MY00. Changed the oil at 45K and had to add a quart just the other day. Changed to Mobil 1 at 10K. And I VTEC at least once or twice a day.

The oil usage is MUCH greater when you VTEC. I assume that you had not yet VTEC'ed when you checked it at 500 miles, and you did VTEC before you checked it at 700 miles. You may also be looking at the dipstick wrong. Make sure you look at both sides of the dipstick, and go with the lower level. You also need to be checking the level with the engine warm, but after it has been turned off for a couple minutes, so the oil will quit dripping down the dipstick passage.

Thanks for the information. Just to clarify. I am at 800 miles and still have not VTECed... So the 200 miles between 500-700 were driven just like the rest of the break-in miles.

I do a lot of reving up to 5k and letting the engine break itself on the highway in 5th or 6th gear. Depending on laws and traffic. Could this add to oil usage?

I am aware of the normal oil consumption of the car, I just thought that 1 qt in 200 miles may have been excessive.

Also, when I did check the car was warm, but it probably could have still been a little warmer. I don't know how warm you would consider it if I told you it sat in the driveway for about 3-5 minutes in 80 degree weather.

Anyone else have anything to comment?

TY

That is not correct. What you are measuring is the level of oil in the sump or oil pan. For the "most" accurate reading all the oil needs to drain back down into it from the engine. That happens when the engine has cooled down. It's far easier to make an improper reading when it's hot, although there should not be any big difference if you do it right. The reason it's easier to make an error is hot oil runs, thus it can more easily run off the dip stick.
