so i lifted the car...

the propeller shaft is leaking oil and when it spins it splatters oil all over the resonator can as well as the diff mounts.

problem now is that i need to get a new propeller shaft at $1,000 in parts only.

anyone able to fix a prop shaft leak without shelling out big bucks for a new shaft?

There had to be another source of oil, besides the engine, trans, mounts and diff.
At some point I was thinking: maybe shocks?

Anyway..

Did this happen all of a sudden?

Where is the oil/grease coming from exactly?
(grease = oil with thickner, it could be grease)
There is a dust boot on the CV, if that is torn I guess you're done.
If it is just the clamp that has failed you might be able to fix it.
You can repack the CV with grease.
IIRC there is oil (?) in the propshaft to dampen the sliding in/out, but I've never seen any pics to confirm, let alone how to fix.

(ex shipping...)

There's only so much grease/oil in there.. it will stop eventually :(

yea, it had me quite perplexed.

it did appear to happen all of a sudden because when i saw the grease drippings on the ground, it just pretty much happened i suppose.

so there is two ends of the prop shaft, the end that is closer to the rear of the car is leaking from the joint.

when i inspected the boot, the clamp appeared to be fine, but there was so much grease everywhere that i couldn't really tell if the boot was torn. i am supposing that it is. hard to imagine the clamp coming apart unless someone struck it at a high velocity. i suppose i can wipe up the grease to see if i can repack the grease and get a new clamp, but odds are the boot is damaged and i will have to get a new prop shaft.

i visited driveshaft.com and they have an aluminum prop shaft for about the same price as an oem at 800-900.

i am wondering why i don't read more about prop shaft boot failures on this site.

thanks for the replies.
