Default oil filter wrench

I am considering doing oil changes myself now. I just bought the jug of Mobil 1 full synthetic and bought a OEM Tools oil filter wrench from auto zone for about $4. Honda wants about $37 for theres. Will this generic one work perfectly fine with the PCX? btw. the wrench fits filter 2-3/4" to 3-1/4".thanks guys

you should be fine. we you go the distance to buy an oem filter wrench, i'd say that's a little overboard.

you usually want to buy a wrench just for the sole purpose of loosening the filter. wrenches usually put a dent or hole in the filter. it's no biggie cause you're gonna toss it anyway.

don't ever tighten the filter with the wrench. the filter metal is really soft and you will puncture it. hand tighten it 7/8 of a turn.

Uh-uh. Not on this Honda. Make sure you use a wrench to tighten it. It tends to losen up... and that is the last thing you want. That goes for your oil cap as well. Make sure its tight.

I agree using a wrench to tighten a filter is never a good idea. Unless you have very weak hands.

The PCX filter needs metal to metal contact (read: torque that thing on like a mother). Unless your hands have a filter wrench built in you'll never be able to hand tighten a filter enough without the assistance of a wrench.

I took a PCX into Advanced Auto Parts and found a wrench cap that fit the top of the filter, uses a 3/8 ratchet. Works great for putting the filter on and taking it off. I've never ruptured, bent, or torn the "soft" metal casing of the PCX...it's actually pretty darn thick, it is subjected to a lot of oil pressure from this engine.

I have been using a generic oil filter wrench and it's been ok. Strips the paint a little because it slips a tad, but tightens it up nice and snug

Better safe than sorry, that's all I'm saying. There are plenty of stories on here of hand tightened filters coming loose on the track and on the street. Do what works for you but, in this case, my filter wrench cost $2 and that's damn cheap insurance by anyone's standards.

Weird, I've also only been hand tightening mine over the past 3+ years I've never had a problem and I have tracked the car quite a lot. However, I do tighten it pretty good by hand.

Also, this engine does not use more oil pressure then standard. Most engines run in the 80psi range which is what our is. The F20/22 is not a special high oil pressure engine.

Yeah, run a search for 'oil fire' and you'll find several threads explaining why hand tight just isn't good enough for the pcx filter. Basically when it loosens, oil sprays right on the hot header.
