did a search on the word "porous" because i'm experiencing this "leakage" and wondering if i should i care? the leaking is almost impossible to pinpoint and all i see it grim collecting on moisture. how to fix? should i fix? it bugs me ALOT.

Hmmm, it doesn't look bad enough to bother with.

I had my block replaced at 13,000Km due to porosity but Honda picked it up at the 10K service and did it under warranty.

On the weekend I was speaking with Chris Barry and he mentioned a process where they immerge the block in a liquid and it works it's way into the pores and hardens. But it will still require a huge pull down and lots of work.

 

I noticed that "seep" at exactly the same place [at the gasket seam between the two bolts] couple of months after I got my MY04. I cleaned it up and it never came back. I believe there's a thread someplace that indicated that this is a fairly common event with a new S.

 

although it's common, it's still a defect... which sucks. i have an 07 w/ 5k on it and i was totally confused as to how this could happen.

 

In most cases I don't think it would warrant being called a "defect". My understanding is that the seepage is from the oil that's on the gasket and/or from the plug above it when it's installed bleeding out as the engine heat cycles when it's new.

Clean the seepage up ...... if it comes back you may indeed have a problem..... if not, forget about it. As I said in my earlier post I had the same seepage [I noticed it about 3 months after I got the car]. I cleaned it up and 2-1/2 years later there is NO sign of further "leaking".

mine's is fudged up. i have oil stains all over...

well, i'm not here to argue about it. I just want to know how to fix it.

so is this a head gasket issue? or is this a porous block issue? 2 totally different areas. when i change my oil again, i'm going to degrease my block and REALLY clean my problem area. Hopefully, it goes away...

 

It is a porous casting on the portion of the head covering the timing chain gallery. 99% of the time you can just clean it and ignore it. On the real bad ones Honda has replaced the head under warranty.
