Was driving on a highway going 65-67 in third gear @ around 7000 rpm. Tried to shift into 4th and put in 2nd, released the clutch, rpms went up into redline for 1-2 sec. I think the redline flashed twice before going down. Pressed the clutch as soon as it happened, put it back in third and kept driving. The car drives fine, but im going all paranoid thinking i bent the valves. Do you guys think its ok if it happened once. Looking at the graph at turnzero website, it looks like rpm went up to 9000-95000 rpm. By the way, the car is a 2004 ap2 w/ 46000 miles.

 

I guess the general response will be to take it to someone and get the valves checked. Also, you may wanna do a compression or leakdown test. Even though it may SEEM fine, I wouldn't take the chance. It happens, don't sweat it. Hopefully everything is ok.

 

9-9500 you are almost certainly safe, Pull the valve cover and inspect all your valves. Note if any of them look like they're in a different position, etc.

Then adjust clearances if you want.

 

Dont pull the valve cover, dont check anything.

Your AP2 is 100% fine, guaranteed.

 

AP1 and ap2 exhaust valves bent at 10,700.

AP2 retainer MIGHT crack at 11,500. The crack rpm is beyond 10,700 for sure.

If your engine is running smooth, it's fine.

If it was an AP1 I would look for broken retainers after putting an additional 5k miles on the car.

These are the facts

 

Another fact...an AP2 can withstand a 3-2 mis shift at 8 grand, no problem. no bent valve, no broken retainers, nothing.

Have you seen how well the AP2 motors hold up to 8500rpm? I know there are a lot of STR and track guys running their AP2 motors to 8800, but that seems like a ton of revs on an AP2 motor.

 

Based on billman's information, the ap2 can handle a missshift from basically almost any gear into the next lowest gear. The only exception is a 2nd back to 1st misshift, that'll kill you dead.

2nd -> 1st = over 12,000 rpms
3rd -> 2nd = 11,000 rpms almost exactly
4th -> 3rd = 10,200 rpms or so
5th -> 4th = 10,000 rpms

 

Sure, but the line is too thin...Meaning that it also depends for how long you have it in these rps. Also, we are unable to see how many rpm's we have when we pass the 9000.....hahaha! Better not happen in the first place, the other is just (a bad) history
