Default Overheating

Hi!

Hopefully somebody will be able to help - I was driving to work this morning and I noticed that the engine temp had gone up to 4 bars and then 5 bars. I had only driven 6 miles and not at in any traffic. I immediately pulled over and the bars went back down to 3. I turned the hot air on full but cold air was blowing out.

I let the engine cool down and the temperature returned to normal. Weird thing is that when you put your foot down, hot air all of a sudden comes out!

Is it a simple case of the thermostat being knackered or is it a more serious problem??

I hope someone can help!

thanks

Richard

Sounds like you need to bleed some trapped air out of the coolant system.

Agreed with windhund116 on this initial diagnosis. However, if you burp the cooling system and find that there is trapped air the next step will be to determine how the air got in there to begin with. If there is air in your cooling system and you did not recently perform any maintenance that could have introduced it into your system such as a flush, I would then check the following for leaks.

1. radiator cap (make sure the pressure relief valve inside hasn't broken off)
2. coolant reservoir
3. coolant reservoir cap
4. upper and lower coolant hoses
5. upper and lower radiator tanks (look closely around the upper neck)

Hopefully it's just a little air in your system after a flush, and nothing more. Good luck!

This is an awesome writeup. If you take care of these steps and you're bleeding the system properly you should get heat. When you finally get heat drive the car and keep an eye on the temps. If you're still overheating check the upper and lower coolant hoses. If the upper hose is hot and the lower hose is cold then you have a bad thermostat. Good luck!

Actually the top radiator hose is the 'to' hose that carries coolant to the radiator as such it will always be hotter than the lower. This is because the lower is the return hose for coolant that has passed across the radiator. If the lower is as hot as the upper you have a problem.

You need to bleed the coolant until you get burning hot heat. It should feel like air out of a hairdryer.
