Default P0420 engine light code (cat) only 60k miles

Got this light/code for the first time. Just hit 60k miles. Seems early for this but maybe I’m wrong. I saw Billman say to use an $8 spark plug spacer between the cat and 02 sensor.
Just want an opinion .....since I got this at “low” mileage I’m better off considering a new OEM cat? Just want to give this car the best but don’t want to needlessly spend $650.

If the cat is bad fit a high flow cat for $225.

Or a used oem low mileage cat. Silly to spend for new oem cat.

It does seem odd for cat to go bad at that mileage. Any chance someone used leaded fuel in the car somehow? Or if there was a chronic misfire issue that went on for a while? Those could kill a cat early.

Fyi, catalytic converters are warrantied for 8 years, 80k mi in the USA.

You're under on miles - if you're also under on time, just warranty the cat. My first cat went bad at around 60k and I had a year left on the warranty, so a new cat and O2 sensors were free.

don’t believe so. LAST owner babied it and I fill up 91 no ethanol 100% of the time.

Maybe just the O2 sensor or connections? As others have said, try clearing the code and see if it comes back.

Good luck!
