Default Possible Transmission Damage?

Hello everyone,

Recently picked up an AP2 transmission to swap into my AP1, the transmission was from an 05 with ~40k miles on it. I installed it the other day and didn't swap out the fluids (yes I am an idiot for assuming the fluid was okay). Anyway I finished the install and went to take it for a spin around the neighborhood to verify I have all gears. Everything was great, shifted like butter, no odd noises. The next day I was going to take it on a bit longer trip, I started driving and had 2nd, 4th, and 6th pop out at cruising speeds and then those same gears started to make some pretty loud whining noises. I turned around and went home to drain the fluid....turns out there was around a half quart of oil that came out and it was jet black. I inspected the oil for any metal parts and didn't find any.

I am currently at work and plan to stop by Honda today to grab some MTF to throw in it....I fear that since the gears were whining I have already done damage though....any opinions for a peace of mind on this?

Fill it, drive it, find out.

The old oil was likely full of moisture. If there is not enough oil in the trans, it will tend to pop out of gear.

Maybe you're ok? Maybe not. Depends on how long it was driven like that.

+1 fill with new fluid and drive it. It is most likely fine.

I will update the thread once I get the new fluid in, really hope that since it wasn't too far there was minimal damage but based on the crazy loud whine I am still stressing!

The loud noise was probably from the tail shaft bearing as those are most likely to go out due to the lack of lubrication.

It was odd as the noise was only in 2nd, 4th, and 6th, other gears were quiet. It didn't sound like tailshaft bearings though...I am familiar with the noise due to my ap1 trans having that issue.

I hope you turned home after it popped a few times, but I'm sure your just high anxiety after dropping all that money. Take your time doing the fluids properly and try it all again, im sure you'll be fine since it's such short term. No use feeding the anxiety until you know for sure.
