I had the exact same problem with MY00, did you drain the oil yet? Im sure your oil is full metal. You probably spun a bearing.

change your oil! and if you smell burning oil, check to see where the leak is. it is probably on the exhaust side which explains the burning, otherwise it is internally, and coming out your tailpipes. check around and see where it is coming from.

Well, I won't be able to bring it into honda this week to get them to open up my engine and see if anything damaging has happened. But I did get an oil change, no noticeable metal shavings in the oil, oil did smell slightly burnt. BUT! a huge cause of the smell was a damn plastic bag burned onto my exhaust pipe. Nasty! New oil in, the car is running fine, though i'm probably not going to be revving into vtec until all is known.

No weird sounds from the engine, no dash warning lights, no smoke from exhaust pipes. (plastic bag burning smell is still present even though I scraped it all off). Looks like luck might just be on my side. Honda engines just don't like to break down easily?

So here's how it all starts out. I have an '02 with 54000+- miles. Last oil change was 50000 miles ago.
Is that correct? If so

compression and leak down will tell you nothing about bearings. the only way to really know is to take off the caps and look.

with the burning smell id almost be tempted to look for an oil leak somehwere.

and the smell when only in VTEC worries me a little
