Power Loss
Hello all. My car is a stock 2000 my AP1. No mods and it's my daily ride. It has 240k miles on it. I had the engine rebuilt 33k miles ago. The car has been great till about a month and a half ago. The problem that I'm experiencing happens intermittently. I'll be driving along and all of a sudden I'll lose engine power. I'll have electric power, everything is working but no response from the pedal. No noise, no rattles, no bucking, no indication that anything went wrong at all. I'll pull to the side of the road and the car is still idling. I can rev the engine wait a minute or two and go again. I may go a block or I may go a mile and then it happens again. Then just as suddenly as it started it will stop and everything will be fine. I brought it to the shop and had it checked and found that I had a misfire on cylinder 3. So my mechanic said it could be the coil or the coil boot or a plug. We changed all of the boots and plugs and since we would have to order the coil we thought we would see if if these minor things were the problem. Well the car seamed to be doing fine so I thought I would take it for a long drive for the weekend. I purchase my gas (premium) from the same station and so this weekend I filled the tank and off I went. Everything fine till I was about 100 miles away when it started again. I decided that I should turn around and head back. I had to pull over and rest the car repeatedly. No fun when on the highway. Well after stopping to rest and fill the tank the car ran like a champ the remainder of the way. What I noticed on this trip was that as the tank got lower the problem got worse, when I filled up, the problem went completely away. I have not had a chance to bring it in again but I'm using it every day to go to work and it's working fine. I don't believe that I have bad gas as it just behaves as if it had no gas. Like I said push in clutch and it's still idling. If anyone has had a similar problem or has an idea that would help I would appreciate it greatly.
I feel like its the gas tank creating a vacuum, so that the fuel pump has trouble pumping more fuel out.
Next time it happens, remove and replace the gas cap. See if that has any effect, and if there is a rushing air sound.
If its this, it wouod have to be something related to gas cap or evap canister or fuel return line, etc.

In September 2021 changed all spark plugs, all filters, (except k&n air filter), replaced all gaskets, all rubber like hoses. Even clutch hose for aluminum braided. Valves got adjusted. Changed engine mounts. And who knows what else. But did not change fuel pump.
this is driving me nuts. I tried using only Ethanol free gasoline. It seemed it helped but then problem came back. I own this car since new bought it December 2000 as 2001. I know we'll it's behavior and how to drive it!
It is injection / fuel system issue.
Take out all gas from tank (run it until 0 gas)
Take out the fuel pump (easy DIY on Youtube) / better to order new one as filter inside the plastic cannot be changed (should come with a new socket too)
Clean the fuel tank with dry towel many times until shining
Take out fuel rail and fuel injectors and clean them with injectors cleaner + pro
Take out and clean sparks
Put full tank fresh gas with fuel cleaner
Enjoy!

Your story seems very similar . It used to happen only on long drives. But yesterday just went ro supermarket and it was happening on 3rd gear. Sudden loss of power with gas pedal full pressed.
