Default Power Surge at VTEC

Sometimes (usually the first time I VTEC) there is a very strong transition and notable difference between 5900RPM and 6100RPM. Other times it seems there only a very subtle (almost smooth) transition as VTEC comes on.

Has anyone else noticed differences in the strength of the VTEC hit?

Was your throttle to the floor each time? VTEC is at it's most dramatic at WOT.

Yeah, my car was at normal operating temp and the petal was down. It's weird, it's not like it lacks power, but you just don't feel the surge when it turns on.

On a hot day, after the engine bay has heated up, VTEC won't be as prominent either.

I find that in both cars that I've had VTEC (i-VTEC in my RSX)... the cross over is much more noticeable when the engine is cold, or there is colder weather.

The hotter it is, the less abrupt that kick in the nuts is.

Sounds like heat soak to me. If the car is fully warmed up, and you sit at a long stop light, or park it for a couple minutes, the intake manifold will heat up. It takes several minutes of constant driving for it to cool back down. Does your VTEC seem strong after exiting the highway, and weak in stop-n-go traffic? If so, replacing the intake manifold gasket with an insulator from Hondata will help.

Gernby, Yeah that's exactaly it! I live in S. Florida where there's a lot of stop and go traffic. When there's open road I'll get into it and it just doesn't seem to have to power (or atleast the strong VTEC pulse) as it does when I first put it down after being warmed up.

I'll check that insulator out... does anyone know if it's a hard install??
