Default Prominent Vacuum Sound

Hey all,

I just spent the better part of 3 days driving an MY00 S2000, from here (L.A. actually) to Oklahoma City.
Almost instantly I noticed a vacuum sound that you can hear over the engine noise. Sounds kinda cool actually, like an SC - but not.

The car ran fine, but made such a different sound than what MY car makes. This seemed strange.
Both cars are stock - no intake, no exhaust.......mechanically stock.

Just to verify when I got back to town I hopped into MY car and sure enough.......no constant vacuum sound. I DO hear the air pump turn on at start-up, so I know its not that. This is a totally different, and constant whine. You can even hear it right up until WOT, so it is pretty strong.

Any ideas?????????

Thank folks,
Hockey

Could the car have "had" a S/C before and has been put back to stock? If so, then it could still be running a high output fuel pump as most guys won't go to the trouble of putting the stock pump back in. These H.O. pumps can sometimes make quite a noise. It's more like a high pitched whine.

Hey!

If it isn't the one and only.......XViper.

Thanx for dropping a line or two.

I don't believe it ever had an SC, although I will double check with the owner. It really is a pretty stock car, minus some Corbeau Seats and a sound system........the car seems untouched.

It was almost like a turbine on a jet engine - really obvious high pitch singing.

(Maybe he has a "Tornado" in his intake and the incredible vortex-ing action is really working)!!!!!!!
Just kidding!!!!! Duh.

....anywho, thanx for letting this rattle around in your head at least.

This is pretty much like what a high output fuel pump sounds like. Let me ask you. Does this sound stay at a constant pitch regardless of engine speed or road speed? Or does it change with engine speed? Vacuum noises will generally change pitch with rpm. A fuel pump always pumps at about the same speed and thus, will not change.

I suppose there is a remote possibility that your secondary air injection pump is stuck ON but you already said that you know what this sounds like and it's not that.

Does it sound like he has a bad ground in his sound system? Does the high pitch whine come from the speakers? In this case, it will generally correlate with the engine RPM.
