Default Proper Engine damper setup

Hi,

I've bought a J's engine damper but it came with Japanese manual. I installed it according to my common sense and I found that everything is ok except the damper rattles when the engine rev < 800 rpm @ idle. A faster idle above 820 rpm won't make any noise and no noise at all on driving.

I've searched the forum and I believe there's something wrong with the "preload" on the damper.I know how to set up preload for springs on my shocks but I don't know how to set up this damper. When I installed the damper, I just hand-tighten the adjustment ring on the damper lightly and then installed the damper directly without pushing the engine. Though there was a little compression to the damper to fit the mount but I doubt if it's enough.

Can someone tell me if I have too much or too little "preload" for this case? And what's the correct procedure to install it, such as tighten the adjustment nut before/after installation, when and how hard to push engine. etc...

I might do it in a trial and error way but if I could get the direction here I could save much time and avoid damage.

Many thanks,

Peter

P.S. I found that the shifting is much smoother than before after adding the damper.

The damper is not a spring or a shock...meaning it doesn't compress or decompress. So I don't think there is a pre load?

I see many people install this wrong. You want the part with the grip bolt to be towards the engine. Then you tighten the large bolt on the piston locking about half of the insert with grip bolt in place. Now leave the thin piston part loose and bolt the whole thing to the car with no load. Then spin the whole grip bolt with your hand until there is pushing tension (not pulling) on the engine. Spin it a few more times depending on how much "damping" you want. Finally lock it in with the smallest nut at the end. Done.

I recommend using Puddymod's braket. Also make sure the balljoints have enough play room to swivel without making contact with anything. Your car vibrates more than you think so something will break if don't do this.

He is correct. It's not a shock but more like an engine mount. There is just a rubber piece at the end of the cylinder.

Thanks. I think I need some times to digest the procedures... more complicated than I thought.

Good to know that "many people install this wrong" so I'm not the only one

I'll take a picture later and mark it up. Maybe put it in the FAQ as this comes up often.

I installed it how it they show in the instructions and have had no problem. I would suggest using the pushing on the engine method, as long as you aren't he-man I don't think you'll push it so much that you get the chatter-teeth effect.

Would you mind tell me how to install it with the push engine method, as I don't have an English manual... thanks.
