Default Pulley Question

It seems to be the general consensus from people I have talked to that changing the crankshaft pulley with an aftermarket one shouldn't be done. Now, is there any consequences in replacing the the Idler pulley and the Tensioner pulley.

I have been pacing around my garage since I am waiting on parts to be made for my engine and boredom started to set in so I pulled these off one of my spare engines and had a friend machine them out of billet Alum. The specs are the same but about half the weight.

I am not expecting any performance from them, I just like the way they look and just wanted to be sure no ill side effects would pop up if I actually installed them.

UL, what is your opinion?

Wow, those look great. I'm sorry I can't answer your question, I'd like to know myself. Like you said, no real performance gains but I like the weight loss thing, even if we're talking grams here.

They look pretty. And I agree, a few ounces is nice to shave off.

Reducing the weight of these pulleys is probably going to have the same effect as reducing the weight of the flywheel. Doing this in combination with reducing the weight of the flywheel will probably have negative effects (noisy idle, difficult to drive, etc.).

That just looks sweet!!! How much do these Alum. pieces cost to get milled? I know there is a water pump pully with a alum one. As I don't really want to tear appart my car to get to the fly wheel I would be interested in what UL or others have to say about freeing up this static weight load on the engine.

I definitly might look to pick up a couple of these!!! If that is possible.

What reason did people site for not replacing the crank shaft pulley?

I believe the reason for not replacing the crank shaft pulley was due to vibration. Since the stock one has some sort of dampener on it I believe..don't quote me on that though. I just know people on this forum has said don't do it and I even talked to AEBS about it since they are building one of my engines and they even suggested not to since it will wear out the main bearings and even possible break the crank.

If there is not going to be any detrimental side effects I would like to replace all the pulleys beside the crank pulley with matching billet one's

Pinky - After UL posts his thoughts on these and you are still interested in them then I will ask my friend what he would charge. He already has these 2 pulleys saved in his programs. Just PM me

Like Pinky says, they do look sweet! Please put me down for a set.

I have installed the Toda flywheel and lighter weight pressure plate. The idle is smooth and I have no trouble launching the car, so that's good.

Lighter accessory pulleys should not create any issues. Underdriving the accessories could cause issues with power or cooling, but as long as you don't overdo it, nothing major and probably only near idle.

I'm of the opinion that you don't replace damped crank pulleys unless you're putting a better damper on it.

the crankshaft pulley on all b series motors (not sure about the f series) act as a harmonic balancer to internally balance the motor.
