Default Question about diff and axcels

Ok today I decide to do the C/V swap on my rear today. To make a long story short I have been getting a vibration really bad, and think it is the c/v joints getting pitted.
https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.ph...pic=236936&hl=

I have a MY00 with 40,000+ miles. All of my mods are in my sig.........

OK Here we go:
Once I get the car in the air on jackstands I decide to see if there is any play in the C/V joints. I have the E-break off and the car out of gear. I try to move the C/V joint in and out left and right. I can't move the c/v joint at all, everything there seems good. But I notice that it is moiving up and down where it enters the diff.

Now I am laying on my back with my feet towards the rear. If I grab the axcel, like I was going to bench press it, and push up and down there is play where it goes into the diff. Where the axcel seperates from the diff (where the 6 bolts are). I can move that whole thing slightly. Is this normal or am I looking at possible diff damange?????

Any help or tips on what to check would be very helpful
Thanks Kenny

Thanks a lot..... The movement it not that much. But there is deff some there. You know what i am talking about. I wish I could have described it the way you did. I am not a pro by any means but have done all of the work to the car myself. I have been working on all kinds of hondas for the last 5 years or so.

There is prob about 1/16 inch of play when I push up and the same when I pull down. So I would say that there is about 1/8 inch of play from top to bottom. If I wiggle it up and down pretty fast I get a clunk noise.

I wonder If i should go ahead and do the swap and see if there is still the same amount of vibration. If so then I would have to think my diff is damaged. My vibration is very noticeable on right hand turns, but turns in general

Thanks for the quick responce as I am basically under the car right now........
Kenny

If the movement is significant, I would suspect the output shaft bearing or bearing cap. These have been known to go and hence the Comptech re-inforced parts. However, this may only be an indication of something else going on that has preceeded this. As Harry said, the key is exactly how much movement are you talking about.

Just checked it again and it is very easy to move the output shafts. I can move them in almost any circular direction, AND IN AND OUT of the diff. It does not take much force at all to move them. Both sides have the same amount of play. And it is very easy to get the output shafts to make a clunk noise by wiggling them. The clunk noise sounds almost exactly the same as the noise that I get when going from reverse into first......

I would have to say that there is 1/8 inch of play in a orbital motion and about doubble that in and out of the diff.....

^ This doesn't sound at all normal to me. The output shaft should not move in and out of the diff more than about 1/16" and circular motion (not rotational) should not be more than what Harry said.

Do u guys think my best bet would be to take the diff out and mail it to Hardtopguy or billman250?????? Is it cheeper to fix a diff that did not blow up yet???? I would deff like to get the comptech reinforcement and some stronger gears prob 4.57 cyro treated.

Since you are close to those fellas, it's an option. I'd rather not be the one to tell you what to do in this case. It could be quite an expense. Also, you still need to confirm that the CVs are OK. I'd hate to see you send that away only to discover that nothing has changed after you get the diff back.

I here you man........... I have been wanting to do the diff just as a piece of mind thing for so long now........This just gives me better reason to do the work. Right now I have S/C but plan on going turbo very soon. Well, soon as I get the diff and gearbox done right

Kenny, if your diff does go on you Don still has his Kaaz LSD if you want it. He's selling it for pretty cheap because his volvo S60R comes in about a month. Give him or me a call..

Later,
Ryan
