Default Question regarding brake calipers

Took apart my brake calipers to get them powder coated. The fronts were a piece of cake once I managed to get CDA to remove the pistons. However, I noticed that the insides of the calipers (where the pistons sit) were not completely smooth. The portion I am referring to is not the sides of the piston hole but the bottom side of the piston hole where the brake fluid sits. In fact, when I was removing the brake fluid from the left front piston it was dark and appeared to have some metal particles. The right side was clean.

I take it since these are cast they are not needed to be perfect out of the mold since they are machined out to the necessary tolerance. Has anyone else noticed this? Is this normal?

Don't remember anything unusual about mine when disassembled. The cast cavity would likely be rough and as noted have no effect.. but should have been clean.

By the way Chris thanks for the help on getting the pistons out. I did not know if there was a trick for the fronts. The rears I assumed needed to be screwed out since you screw them back in for new pads.

Regarding the particles. I was a little shocked to see them. Bleeding the brakes on the S2000 in the past has been uneventful. The particles only came out once the caliper was removed completely. In checking and installing new SST brakelines there were no particles at all. Hence my conclusion. Particles could theoretically block the bleeder valve hole.

The seal is made between the grove that holds the square O-Ring and the outer sides of the piston , the inside of caliper does not require machining . The rear caliper has two seals in the emergency brake lever area one where the arm turns and one where the pin pushes on the inter screw in part . If you plate or powder coat, you need to remove these parts . Removal will require special pliers or some real talent on your part. I would make sure that calipers are completely dissembled or the heat will ruin the seals .

Completely disassembled brake calipers prior to powder coating. Caliper rebuild kits on order. Way cheaper and more interesting then going through Rick's.

Just a little plug for myself, if anyone is interested in getting there's done, send me a PM. I'm doing Austin_S2000's for him, and when I have some cash, I'll be doing my own.

If you PM me I'll send you pics when I get them back.
