Default Question regarding mechanic pricing.

Okay, I posted a while back about needing a new engine because of a spun bearing..my insurance ended up paying for it, but the place my car was taken to is telling me I need a lot of 'extras'. In general they just sound shady (wanted to charge me $400 for two front tires on an 01.)

Anyways, the car has 45,XXX miles on it and is an 01. The list of stuff needing to be done is

Serpentine Belt
Waterpump
Upper and Lower radiator Hose
Radiator and Power Flush

Total - 560

Basically my question is, with that number of miles, does it sound reasonable?

Generally, NO! But each car is different with each owner treating their cars differently and doing different things to them. Ask them for their rationaled for why they think this stuff needs changing. Did you contaminate the cooling system somehow? You easily check an autoparts store for prices on all those components.

ps. Please make the title of your thread mean something. There are hundreds of thread in the archives and all they say in their titles are "Question". Doesn't tell the reader much about what's inside the thread.

First of all - put something descriptive in the title. "I wana ask yoos guys something" is worthless.
Something like: "question on costs associated with engine change", "are these prices legit", or "legitimate add-on charges or a rip?" at least put the reader in the know.

Secondly, call at least three Honda certified shops to get a feeling for what your car really needs and for what you may get charged. To get an idea how much the parts should cost, look in the marketplace under the HardTop Guy ... hell, just Google Honda wholesale parts and you'll find a dozen places around the country that sell parts wholesale through the internet.
If you're not mechanically inclined, expect to pay about $70-$90 an hour for someone to fix your car for you.
If you whine, complain and are generally a pain in the ass, expect to get charged a 'Bitch' handling fee - you won't see it listed that way, but if you feel you're pissing off your mechanic and service manager ... it'll be there between the lines.

Thirdly, do yourself a favor and educate yourself on the inner workings of your car - and cars in general. Dishonest places jump for joy when someone drops by their shop without a clue.

The numbers you posted aren't way out to lunch. You could save a few bucks if you did a little homework though.

$400 for OE front tires (Bridgestone SO2 Pole Position) ...

The OE front tires are $163 each on Tire Rack. Add shipping, mounting, balancing ... that's right in the ball park.
Once again ... educate yourself.
That search took me all of 3 minutes.

Not keeping track of how low the oil gets, maybe? Or using the wrong viscosity of oil or not changing it at the proper interval. There are other ways.

So the prices he listed were purely for parts.
Serpentine Belt - $57.00 http://www.slhondaparts.com/browse.asp?Mod...d=38920-PCX-004

Waterpump - $108.00 for the rebuild parts http://www.slhondaparts.com/browse.asp?Mod...d=19210-PCX-003

Upper and Lower radiator Hose - $52.00 http://www.slhondaparts.com/browse.asp?Mod...&ViewParts=true

Radiator and Power Flush - 2 gallons of Honda Type II (20 bucks?)

They must be getting their parts from Bloomingdales.

He said the 'power flush' required it to be sent out and that they had to pay to have it done.

Take your car, drive away, and never go back to that shop, ever again.

Exactly why did they think you needed this done, anyway? Under normal circumstances, this is 10yr/100,000mile kind of work.
