Default Question on shifting...

or more specifically mis-shifting. My question is this: If you mis-shift a car, but realize quickly enough to get your foot back on the clutch, can you do any damage? Does it depend on what rpm you shift at (ie whether you hit the limiter really hard)? My 00 celica is on its way, but I've heard a lot of problems about people mis-shifting it because the gates are small. I have driven a couple of other cars with small gates, including an S and a new M3. I mis-shifted the M3 once, and it didn't blink at all. Thanks!!

Does it matter if I catch it hitting the clutch, or does misshift = death (to the engine)?

If you catch it before the clutch engages you'll be fine. I've done that once and cought myself before I released the clutch. I hit a bump while shifting and ended up shifting from 3rd to 2nd ( instead of 4th ). Just before I was about to let the clutch out something told me double check the gear.

If you let the clutch out and then realize it.. it's already to late.

This is good news vs bad news. The good news is the tranny
usually lets go before the motor, $5600 vs $11000 in damage. The bad news is neither is covered under warranty.
