Default question for ticking noise

hey guys, I am new to s2000's and I just bought one with 36000 miles, 2001 model. I am getting a very light ticking noise from the engine only when i am accelerating but the moment I clutch in or idle I dont hear it. I have heard a lot about valve adjustments is this a symptom? I have low mileage so I didn't expect to need one so soon

Whatever you do, don't ever bring this car to a Honda dealership for service. They've destroyed more of these cars than anyone.

They don't see enough of them to know anything about them. Yet they're arrogant, and insist they're the only ones that know anything. They're constantly using worng filters, wrong fluids, messing up simple things turning them into big things.

When they damage your car, somehow its always your fault, and they expect you to pay them to fix the stuff they broke.

Their service rates are consistently higher than anywhere else.

Ant dealership service dept main goal is to sell you a new car. Make you think your old obe is getting too expensive to maintain, too many problems. So them making your car worse isn't something an employee is going to get punished for.

Your trusted local mechanic is equally not a good choice, as there are certain quirks to these cars they won't know about, won't think to investigate. Sone stuff like brakes, suspension, ac, anyplace can work on. But oil change, valve adjustment, clutch replacement, softop replacement, and certain other services require someone with S2000 experience.

Find someplace local that really knows these cars. Post in your local areas sub forum to ask where to go.

Better yet, learn to diy. These are about the easiest cars to work on out there. None of the stuff mentioned is difficult, just requires someone not arrogant and willing to research and learn. Not assume their 50 years of experience means they know what to do.

The S2000 uses solid lifters in the valve train and is "clicky" for want of another word. If the valves are too tight the click goes away so you should hear them. Valve adjustment is always good preventive maintenance and is tedious and back straining but super simple. Maybe $30 in "special" tools and another $30 for new gaskets. Photo essays in the library (here) and Youtube videos abound. If you can't find another owner to bond with find one familiar with Honda 4-cylinder motorcycles as these engines are scale models of the S2000 engine and also have solid lifters..

Never go to a dealership. Find your nearest S2000 specialist and take it to them for a tune-up.

Have you measured the valve lash settings?

Thanks!

To me, the YouTube video sounds okay.

Measuring the valve lash may help alleviate some of your fears.
