Default quick brake pad question...

Just a quick brake pad question.... I have a stock MY2000 with original brake pads. No rush to change them, but when it's time, do I go with the OEM pads or is there a better choice? If going non-OEM do I need to do all four wheels at once? Thanks!

Aloha

Dave

The OEM pads are the best choice for low noise, low rotor wear, and great braking on the street. You'll only need to replace what wears out 1st, front or rear pads.

All of the performance/race pads will be noiser, wear rotors and dust more than OEM pads.

If changing away from OEM then yes, you will probably need to change all four to the new compound. You want to keep the brake balance the same. But I would definitely recommend just staying with OEM.

Some race pads only operate effectively once they have warmed up sufficiently, and may not be suitable for street use.

Thanks for your advice!!! That's simple -- I'll stay with the OEM pads.

I agree, I made the mistake of going with Cobalt GT's and they squeek like crazy. I sound like a freight train coming to a stop. They do have a bit more bite, but not worth the headache and break dust. I have OEM pads again, just waiting for a nice day to install them.

when should I change the pads? is there a minimum thickness that I should change. I have MY02 with 30k mi. the front brake squeaks on cold days and I was thinking of changing the pads.

it really just depends on driving habits & track events if you do them. the wear indicator will squel when they are thin..........

The Replacement level is 1.6mm. No brake pad is quiet all the time. OEM pads are the quietest of all, but they can still make noise and be just fine. Usually noise in the AM is from overnight rust build up on the rotors. Hit the brakes a few times and the noise is gone.
