im about to purchase a k&n fipk, and a cooling plate with a snorkel that comes down to the middle of the grill, does this have a stronger possibility of hydrolock, it rains relatively often here and didnt know if the length of the snorkel would keep this from happening. any input would be appreciated. thanks, keith

 

Unless you submerge the filter you will not hydro lock.

Yep...just driving in rain isn't the problem...unless you have the AEM style with the faux brake duct cut that dumps air right onto the filter.

 

so even water from puddles and such getting sucked up the snorkel wont get to the fipk or for that matter through the filter?

 

I have a Fujita which has the filter sitting pretty low (definitely lower than the FIPK + snorkel) and that's true for it as well. It definitely rains down here.

 

i can bet you anything you don't need to submerge it hydrolock the car.

after several rescues and seeing seized motor, most of them weren't even driven hard in a heavy rain, let alone a standing puddle/body of water

 

If you are looking for a 100% guarantee...well...you aren't going to get it. There was a post just within the past week where an owner hydrolocked with a stock intake. Is that rare? Yeah...first one I recall seeing in nearly 8yrs on the board.

How unlikely is hydrolock with the set up you're considering...pretty unlikely. I'd have no concern at all in running that set up in Florida where heavy rain is a daily phenomena in the summer. But I understand that it would be more risky than a 100% stock airbox.

I had a customer hydrolock with the K&N fipk driving through 10" of water. His screen name is Ducmann996.

 

The K&N is almost as safe as the stock airbox in regards to hydrolocking, and much more safe than the others that relocate the filter down behind the bumper. However, as others have said it isn't a sure thing, and if you hit 1 or 2 feet of standing water going pretty quickly, you have a high probability of hydrolocking regardless of your intake.
