Default rattle

Hi All,

Just a quick question?

Ive noticed of late that when i start my car from cold there is a random rattley tappy sound that comes from what sounds like inside the valve cover area. I dont think it was there a while ago as ive only noticed in the last few days. Its not very loud but noticeable if your listening for it.

Its not the kind of tappetty clicky sound associated with valves and followers or fuel injectors and its not consistent in rhythm. It happens for about 5 mins then disappears totally when the engine has warmed up.

It kind of sounds like something is being tossed around inside the valve cover.

I know the description is rather vague and difficult to diagnose over the net but thought id see what you guys/girls thought before i take it to Honda.

Car is a 2005 model, 18,000 miles on it and pulls well with no other issues. Oil level is fine.

Many thanks.

It is nothing to pull the valve cover hand have a look, so why not? Recent oil change? Using a quality oil filter with good ADV? Another possible issue is the timing chain tensioner. This will come more from the front of the block and sound like a playing card in the spokes of a bike. Just suggestions.

Thanks for the response. I dont think its the tct as they sound alot different to this noise and tend to get worse when warm but this noise disappears totally when engine is up to operating temperature.

If i pulled the valve cover i'm not really sure what i would be looking for,no recent oil change.

May get Honda to check the valve clearances but imk not convinced thats the problem as i mentioned the noise disappears when engine is warm.

I hope its not cam float or anything serious like that.

I noticed this as well. I have an 04 with 48xxx. It's something I keep in the back of my mind and not worry about tremendously due to the fact that it does subside completely when at operating temps. I think its cold contracted metal that hasn't warmed enough to seat itself properly? I think its coming from the valves but I'm no expert so I am speculating. Maybe its time for us to get a valve adjustment..... Any other opinions from those with more technical experience would be helpful!

I just changed my oil and filter as well and still have the issue, so Im on the same boat as you Bandit.
