Those of you who have re-greased your CV joints, how hard a job was it? What kind of grease did you use - wheel bearing grease, chassis grease, something specially made for CV joints, something else?

Do you have to replace the boots too? Also, did you need another car to go get additional parts after you started? I'm down to one vehicle right now so I thought I should ask all this before I start?

 

Honda sells a reboot kit. In the kit there is everythig you need. Grease, boots, boot clamps. All you need to do the job is a boot clamp tool.

I have a set of kits that I was going to use, but it seamed like more work that I was willing to do at the time. I own a few sets of axles, so I put it off. So I really can't say how bad it really is. I just thought it was more work then I wanted to do right then.

 

They list for about 30 for the set. You will need two of each to do both ends of both alxes.

This is what I used.

The original grease - the green/grey stuff - looked kinda thin, and this grease was about the same.
I'm not sure if chassis grease or bearing grease is thin enough, I don't know why CV grease is thin, if it is supposed to be thin but I didn't want to gamble.
So far the CV's are good with the GKN grease, after about 8k km.

The OEM boot clamps are easy to re-use.

 

Check out the CV joint/CV hub DIY - it should give you an idea of the job.

 

I was able to re-use the clamps on my MY00, and didnt need a boot clamp tool either, just some channel locks. It was pretty frustrating though, the tool might save some anger.

Oh yea, and be careful when you pull the boots off. Theres lots of grease in there. I didnt have much room under the car when i did it. The first big glob landed on my mouth/mustache and up my nose. Then I turned my head out of surprise and to shake it off and the next big glob went in my ear lol. Not a very pleasant experience, but i was laughing so hard when it happened. Went through a good number of Q-Tips that day.

 

At what mileage/used duty should this procedure be performed?

 

Thanks Stratocaster for the part numbers for the kit, I got mine yesterday. When I got them, I saw the dreaded axle nuts which I just had replaced.

I don't want to go through removing them again, so I checked under the car and the boots look like they're in good condition. So I'm thinking about removing the clamps, pushing the boots back and greasing the CV Joints, replacing the original boots and putting on those adjustable clamps. Anyone else here do it like this?
