but its super loose. if i have it in first gear, i can literally move the shifter in a circle at about 2" in diameter from the top. what can i do to fix this?

You could always buy a new OEM shifter.

Loose or worn bushings?
Pop the console and rubber boot off and take a look.

there is a plastic plate inside that guides the shift rod, due to the short shifter it might have worn out prematurely...

Whoa that should been a red flag during the test drive. Probably not an expensive fix, just annoying. One of the great beauties of the S is the precision of the shifter.

yes, all my friends said a thing or two about the shifter whenever i let them drive my pos

there's a plastic cap on the end of the shifter rod, it might be worn out or cracked.

it's a good time to lube up the shifter while you at it

Had this exact thing happen on mine after I modded the stock shifter,,, I cut the OEM shifter off about 1" above the pivot ball, tapped it to 1/2" 13,, threaded on a 1/2" coupling nut, and then fabricated a custom, shorter all stainless steel shift knob and shaft,, Now I can swap shift levers out to whatever I want,,, Anyway,, the small round nylon pivot ball on the tip of the lever split,, as well as the nylon, "cage" that the pivot ball rides in,,, I made a quicky new tip from a bronze bushing to get me by,, and yes,, there was a TON slop in the lever,,, I bought both a new tip cover, and cage,,, a whoppin $15 I think,,, made ALL the diff in the world!!,,, Just take a 10mm socket and extention with you to the dealer,, I asked for a small amount of bearing grease, and swapped them right there in the parking lot,,, Now it's TIGHT and firm shifts,,,
