Default Rear Axle Pop

Every now and then, when I drive over a bump or uneven pavement, I hear quite a loud pop coming from the rear of the car. This is quite different from the clicking/popping noise folks are hearing when rolling from a stop or when transitioning from a reverse to forward motion, although perhaps could be the same cause (spline nuts need replacing, repacked, and torqued to 220 ft/lbs).

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this for the dealer...

Anyone had similar issues?

The search function has been broken - and this is not the same thing is the clicking noise folks are having problems with when transitioning from forward to reverse or vice versa...

Which is why I started this topic.

Your a great help! Not.

Is that your way of saying you don't know either?

I don't, but then again I didn't give the standard butthead answer, either.

OK....aside from the axle nuts...the suspension points, which are rubber bushings in torsion, may be clicking back and forth in their mounts. The rear lower shock mounts are the first to need tightening. Then check the rest, like the control arm pivots.

Have you checked to see if your spare tire is locked down really tight?

I'm hoping getting new hub nuts fitted @ a higher torque is going to cure this noise for me (but I'm secretely afraid that it's the right outer CV joint causing the problem). Car booked in with a dealer for the beginning of August for the nuts to be replaced (I don't have the tools to do the job - my torque wrench only goes up to 100 lb/ft). If this doesn't cure it then I'm going to wait until it gets a lot worse to definitely diagnose the fault before spending out on a new CV joint.

Symptoms are a "popping noise" when parking and reversing, and a similar noise when going over low speed bumps with the steering turned (EG moving around in a car park). Sometimes the noise is loud and sometimes not so. The strange thing is it doesn't seem to always make the noise and I've never noticed it in the wet (which is what makes me hope its the hub nut thing as the CV joint is enclosed so the water would not be able to get into this to quieten it up).

I'll let you know if the replacing the hub nuts cures the problem (I discussed this on another post and some replies said that it cured the problem for them - others not so!).

yeah i think you have the axle nut problem (regrease and retorque it) but if you think its a problem with the axle and not the nut, jack up the rear of the car, and look at the rubber boots on the CV axles. see if they are torn or not or if they are leaking grease.

I've done this and the cv boots are good, no grease leakage and everything turns smoothly and without any noticeable freeplay. Here's hoping that
