Default Rear Axle's have play and I have a "clunk" shiftin

Hey all, I am a new S2000 owner and really don't know what I should do in this case.

Question for you guys, I just got my s2k and it has 118,000 miles and has been lowered for a good bit of those miles.

I get a clunk noise when shifting gears. The axles have play in them when I grab them and move up/down. The passenger side has more play then the driver side. I can get the clunk noise when grabbing the passenger axle and moving it.

What would you guys do first? I am unsure if its the axles/diff/needs spacers?

Kinda scared to drive it..

if you're mechanically minded at all, i'd take a look at this thread and then take a look at your axle cups.

if not...get a friend who can to

It may be, yet I get the noise on each shift if its a hard shift. It also happens after I shift like when the power is going from the diff to the wheels... I can get the clunk when letting off the gas and punching it.

Thanks for the post!

Maybe I should start with new axles and changed diff fluid ?

the first thing i would do is take it to a mechanic you trust, or check in your local forum and see if there's someone who could take a look/listen for you

I will as soon as I know.

I have been pricing diffs and I am hoping that will be all I need once I find out.
