Default Rear end knock / grumble

Hows it going all,

Have a small issue that's been bothering me lately. I cannot replicate the sound, nor does it happen always.

Periodically at idle, I will begin to here a low deep sounding grumble from the rear of the car from inside the cabin. Sounds like a noise of something roatating and clunking. Had the diff fluid changed earlier this year but decided to change it out again over the weekend. Fluid was clean and free of metal shavings.

Could it be An unbalanced or worn drive shaft?

Any ideas or tips are appreciated!

When you say, "at idle," I assume the car is not moving; if the car isn't moving, the propeller shaft isn't moving. I would assume fuel pump if you're hearing a noise from the rear in that situation.

Yes at idle stationary, if I blip the throttle a hair to say 1100 rpm, the noise goes away. Interesting you mention the fuel pump, I have been experiencing poor MPG's this past month. What would be failing with the fuel pump to cause the noise?

Motor most likely. The bearings for it could be making the noise.

Maybe, check the idler pulleys of the accessory belt. Lift hood and listen carefully to each pulley.

Hmm, thats a good idea as well. I will check it out, although I am almost certain the noise is from the rear, I might be fooled.

Thanks!

On a totally different subject, rear drivers side click from wheel at low speeds. Did axle nut TSB already, tighten more or replace hub assembly? No play in wheel side to side when in the air pushing the tire on either side.

Is it a sound that modulates with your speed?
