Replacing Differential With Different Year
I've got a '01, and the pinion recently blew apart. I'm afraid of metal getting into the diff so I'm planning on just replacing the entire assembly. I'm planning on getting a used on for now. Can I bolt in any s2000 diff in or do I have to replace the '01 diff w/ another '01 diff?
Well, not really. Wisconsin S2k is kind of right. Any year will work and fit, however 00-03 diffs mount with M8 bolts and 04-07 mount with M10 bolts. So if you owned a 00 and got an 04 diff, you would need to swap the flange on the new with the old diff.

IMO that flange isn't just a bolt on.
You need to undo the locking nut and that gets rid of the pre-load on the 2 pinion bearings.
Then when you install your new flange you need to set this pre-load again.
(IMO you also need a new crush sleeve to do it properly)
My servive manual states to do that without the ring gear (and Torsen LSD) installed.
The pre-load torque is not that much, 0.88 - 1.3 Nm.
IMO that is why you dont want the ring gear in, it would make the torque reading very inaccurate.
You will not be sure how your pinion bearings will be pre-loaded.
Taking the ring gear out is basically a complete re-install.
Succes.

Out of curiosity, is there any way he could upgrade to the heavier bolts? Seems like that would be a desireable thing to do if it's not too much hassle.
. I swapped the prop shaft from 02 to 04. But that is costly. The hassle was very small. I was swapping my diff every few weeks for a while, testing things. So just to spell it out incase someone wants to do it.
You need the following:
1. AP2 Transmission or AP2 Transmission Output flange
2. AP2 Prop shaft
3. AP2 Diff or just the AP2 diff flange.
I don't know if you could modify the AP1 propshaft to allow the AP2 bolts to fit, but you can modify the AP1 flanges (diff and tranny) to work.
As SpitfireS said, swapping the diff flange has to be done carefully by a trained perfessional.

An honest newby mistake
May we assume you're back?
