While we're on the subject, how long can we expect the stock shocks to last?

It depends on what you do with the car. I think it can vary from 10K to 100K depending upon your driving, roads, and expectations of effectiveness.

Scott has it right. Don't disconnect the ball joint, remove the two bolts from the chassis and swing the arm away. Very easy.
