Reprgramming the S2K CPU
A friend of mine who is very much into MotoGuzzi motorcycles tells me that on their web page they talk of reprogramming their bike's cpu to get more HP and performance. He claims that of lot of these machines are tuned via the CPU to be clean, economical or the like. On their web site, new "maps" of specifications are exchanged to re-tune their bikes via software
Since the S2K is a very clean running car EPA wise, it's probably not tuned for max performance but a compromise.
Does anyone know anything about re-tuning the specs via software? Can it be done?

Maybe when the new Trust / GReddy E-Manage ECU system makes it to the States officially for sale, they will have some different performance maps. Other than which, the OEM ECU is not generally tweakable.

Can you give us more information on this ECU? Is it designed to replace a factory Honda ECU, or is it just an aftermarket ECU for any car? Please advise... I'm very interested!
We can't tweak it! Why? Is it because the software is in ROMs? No one knows how, _yet_? Or is it lack of hardware / software needs?
We can do anything!! Afterall, we drive S2Ks. 'nuff said.

Since 1996 when OBD2 was enacted, Honda started using "masked ROM" for the ECU code. What this means is that the code is "masked" in the processor chip at the factory. Not only can you not program it, you can not download it to know *what* to reprogram. Prior to this they used a "conventional" setup with a processor and outboard ROM. These were typically write-once chips that could not be reused, but could easily be replaced with a UV or electrically erasable PROM (EPROM or EEPROM).
Our only hope is that Honda will partner with someone to make a new, programmable ECU for our car, or that someone like Hondata will be able to re-engineer an ECU for our car... which at this point looks grim. Unfortunately due to the individual coils our car has, there is NO way to use the older ECUs (you can't simply have it remapped for our engine). The only upside is that the RSX and Civic engines are similar enough, someone like Hondata would be able to re-engineer a Civic or RSX aftermarket ECU to work for our car. I know they are working on it now, but it's not exactly easy work.
Takashi, or anyone else in Japan... if you know of anything over there that works for our car, please share!!!

Unfortunately, from their application guide, it doesn't look like there are any direct ignition cars (individual spark coils) on the list (that I know of). I think that means that this ECU may not have been designed for it, and we may not ever be able to use it (unless they redesign it).
If anyone wants to challenge this, take a look at their app guide:

This is what I know, the Trust / GReddy E-Manage ECU is not a replacement, more like it requires the OEM ECU to run alongside where every specification can be tuned accordingly. While the prices and all the parts and software required is very cheap compared to other JDM tweakable aftermarket ECUs but there is currently no one as yet in Japan who owns an S2K that has done it.
Playing safe, I believe this is only currently available in Japan because of the way it operates. Though the prices are tempting and you can no doubt get one into the country easily but how to get it to work properly is the biggest concern. Still keeping a close eye on Option Fans Japan, maybe once someone has done it ... Then it will be safe. The other issue is, I believe the software is completely in Japanese and is required to run on Japanese Windows or something like that.
