Default Retainers

MY00 F20C2 Intake Retainer

MY05 F20C2 Intake Retainer Cylinder #4-2

Today I took pics of all my MY05 intake retainers.
Something I forgot to do when doing a VA a couple of weeks ago.
When browsing through my old pics of my MY00 engine I found a pic of an intake retainer and noticed a difference.
At first I thought the MY05 retainer was raised and at the point of giving up.
On closer inspection I noticed the retainer itself looks different.
The MY00 retainer has less recession, especially where the cottors are, it looks more "flat" than the MY05 retainer, making that one look raised (and cracked).
All MY05 intake retainers look like the one posted.

What do you guys think?
Did Honda use the AP2/F22 retainers in the Euro AP1 F20C2 engines?
Billman?
Slow?

The only question left is: did Honda do this or not?
The engine is without a doubt a MY05 Euro spec F20C2 sold in (a car in) the UK.
I'm not the first owner though.

Maybe I should ask a question in the UK section: "did anyone replace the retainers on their F20 and then wreck the car?"

Subcribed. Very interesting. If they did start putting them in the Euro spec F20C2 that would prove Billman's point all along that it's a good upgrade for the AP1's.

Spitty...have you weighed them? I would imagine the more stout AP2 retainers are a few milligrams heavier.

I believe they do, however, I doubt he is wanting to remove his valve retainers to find out. The picture of them side by side above I believe is just a web picture he found.

AFAIK - yes they do, came in same time as USDM went to F22C and EUDM stuck to F20C

It wouldn't surprise me if Honda used the Later retainers on all 2.2-2.0 engines after 04. Since there is only one assembly plant IIRC, all F2X engines should be built in the same place.

The parts catalog would be the best resource to check, but you'd have to use a Euro market catalog to verify the later part # retainer in a 2.0L built after 2003.

I checked EUDM catalogue, pre 04 F20C2 engines have old retainers (14765-PCX-000), post 04 comes with new retainers (14765-PRB-A01)

I guess Honda definitely feels they are an upgraded part then if they are putting them in all the motors now. Good find Garis.
