Default Reverse clunking

Hey everyone

So since I got my car when I put it in reverse, turn the wheel and back up my driveway, I'm guaranteed to hear a clunk and click or some sounds like that coming from under the car, I'm thinking it's coming from the diff. Does anyone else experience this? It only seems to happen when I'm backing up on that slope, not generally in parking lots or flat surfaces.

Any thoughts of what this might indicate? or is it typical when the diff reverses direction?

Thanks!

like the post above, by any chance do you happen to step on the brake when you hear the klunk?

No I don't touch the brake, but I suppose it could be coming from the rear brakes. To be honest, it seems to be coming from under the centre of the car, and it happens after I've reversed about 6 or 7 feet, not as I immediately start moving.

Maybe it's time for a visit to the shop

before you do anything else re-torque your axle nuts to 210-220 ft/lbs

Best place to start. When I had that problem it was more of a click than a clunk but describing noises is never easy.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, these axle nuts are located: I'm guessing on the axle, but where?

I'm stoppin by the shop the morning so I can take care of it then. I appreciate the advice!

you can either pop off the denter cover on you wheel that says "H" on it and get to the nut there or you can take the wheel off and you will see the same thing. its the big nut in the middle of the axle/brake rotor it should be dented. you need to "un-dent" it first before removing and dent it again after re-torqing

Thanks very much, I'm assuming this denting will be apparent...

Will the H centre cap just click back into place after? of does it need to be re-affixed somehow?
