Default S2000 dragster

Alright, I'm new to the group and I'm hoping to learn as much as I can about the tuning potential of the Honda S2000. At one of the local junkyards there is a wrecked 2002 S2000. It's white on red and get this, it didn't even have the plates on it yet. A crime against humanity if you ask me but, an opportunity for me. It has a salvage title on it but the damage is minimal(turns out he didn't have insurance). I'm having a deal worked out and it will be in my possesion by the end of this month. I want to know the most power effective measures I can take to make this a strictly drag car. I don't want to know supercharger specifics either. I'm stuck on a turbo. What size turbo is TOO big and what types do I want to stay away from. I really don't want to go with a kit because those a geared with street performance in mind. Also, what do I need to alter internally in the motor to handle gobs of power. How much power can the rear end on this car tolerate. I feel it would be too big of a step to bolt a Ford 9-incher up so if you know of any S2000 rear end rebuild kits that would help. I know there are other things other than the powertrain and drivetrain to consider here but I have my ignition and fuel systems planned out for the most part. But, feel free to give me your input on those too. Yes, I realize the cost of such a project and it's something I'm willing to undergo. Thanks for your help.

The turbo sizing will be dependent on what your final power goals are. But small displacement, big hp turbo apps are well understood now thanks the import drag racing movement so you shouldn't have too much difficulty sizing one for your needs.

On the rear end, I would advise examining what the RX-7 guys are using. They seem to be capable of handling 500+ hp without frequent breakages and the suspension layout isn't that different that you couldn't adapt it pretty easily. Proven solution and probably much cheaper than building your own.

as far as the turbo since for a drag app everything will be custom i would suggest possibly a t66 as you should be able to spool it also a dramatic drop in the comp. ratio is a must as for the rear end i would check on the specifics from spoon but other than that would have to agree with lurker on the rx7 idea

drag car only?
if you wanna do it right tear the transmission and rear-end ouf the S2000.
I would look at a ford 7inch if you think the 9 inch is too extreme. The transmission will have to go.
I would look into getting some sort of high HP auto if you want a drag car only.

It seems silly to me to do this with an S2000. I assume you are trying this with an S2000 because you like the looks of it and handling, but making it into a drag only car is going to mean the handling will be shot and it probably won't be street driveable. I would look to rip out the IRS and put in a straight axel if you want the best possible drag setup. Good luck.

Jarrett, I'm shocked that you found an S2k in B/CS, let alone at a yard! Are you in school there or working there?

s2kpdx01, the only reason I would do something like that is because the car has a salvage title on it and cannot be put back on the street in the state of Texas. May apply for all states but I'm not sure. Also, I can't bear the thought of letting anyone else get their little paws on it. The reason I chose drag over road course racing is because of my miniscule knowledge about the sport(even though the Texas World Speedway is down the street). I do know quite a bit about dragging though so I figured I'd show up at the tracks with something a little bit different. Thanks for the advice though. I have a question. My friend from school has a '68 Camaro with a TCI(VERY good)-built Powerglide transmission. Would this tranny mount up with a custom bellhousing or am I way off. I've seen it done on an Olds 442 and a few other V8's but just thought I'd pose it as a possibility.

marcucci, yes, as a matter of fact I did find one and shocked doesn't begin to descrube the state I was in at the time. We were there looking for the chrome trim that goes around the headlight of the TJ Jeeps for a friend of mine and he pointed it out off in the distance and I just about crapped my pants! Most people, with the exception of one, around here that have S2000's are doctors or lawyers and probably don't know that their car even has an F20C. No offense if anyone out there is a doctor or lawyer, it's just that the ones around here I've talked to and it's like talking to a 13 year old girl about cars. And yes, I am a student here.

Also, another question. What are the specs on the cylinder head internals on a factory S2000 head. I need info such as the valve stem length, stem diameter, head diameter, and which parts are the weakest. I need this info before Monday(10-14) when I have to call Ferrea back. I'm sure other people might be interested and I'll post the prices I get from Ferrea once I've been quoted. Any info on the head you have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you want cylinder head stuff, contact Joe Alaniz at www.alaniztechnolgies.com. He's already done a complete profiling of the head (flow data) and developed valve, spring and retainer applications for it.
