Possible typo: Did you mean to say set TDC for cylinder #3 instead of #4 in the line below?
Yes, a typo and it's been fixed, thanks.

What tool combo did you use to loosen the rear bolt for the heat shield?
I left the shield on. The access from below comment was from a forum post and he didn't describe how he did it.

I know this is a really old thread but nice detailed guide there.

I've had the head off before but I didn't remove TDC1 (as far as I can remember), is removing it just a way to avoid damaging it when pulling the cylinder head off?

Consider it part of maintenance. If you never had it done, do it. I'm going to do it next weekend if the weather stays clear, after that, once a year/couple of years take off the cover and inspect.

Is this something that needs to be done every 60,000 miles or 80k. Also are some sort of shims needed at any point? Great thread.

Just completed the valve adjustment. It's all been said before, but here goes, some tips on my experience:
- car has to be in neutral
- easier to turn the cams if you take off the airbox
- triple check everything just in case
- don't freak out if you see any oil on the exhaust side until you wipe it off (dripped when i put the valve cover back on)
- get a friend to help you, it's like 4 hours depending on how many valves are out of spec.

This was a very helpful write up, I have done my adjustment 3 times, but still not a 100% happy, I had a lot of ticking my first adjustment the gap was too small but quiet, the second I noticed major power increase across full range, aggressive on vtec (which was nice) but still ticky and a little rough idle,l (I went the highest recommend by honda) the third so far is good for idle, power down low and ticking is at a minimum, though I have lost all grunt on vtec, when I adjusted them this time I went with the lowest gap recommend (can't remember the numbers off hand) but any pointers trying to adjust high end without adjusting all?
