Default S2K cooling, how does it work?

Got a question guys, I´m building V-mount but want to learn about the construction of the stock system and how it works, never worked on this type before. All my older cars had a reservoir as highest spot and just had to fill it up.

The radiator cap is not the highest spot of the cooling system, does that mean that higher areas are filled with air? Or will the water stay in the high areas after shutting down the engine due to a closing thermostat? Know there are bleeding caps/screws but they sit high as well. Maybe good to have a air pocket when the coolant expands? Don´t know...

no you don't want any air in the system at all on this car, it needs to be perfectly bled or it will overheat and you'll have coolant spraying out everywhere. The location of the reservoir isn't that important here and you want the system totally free of air pockets for sure.

Thanks buddy, here´s a few more. Can you fill it up completly if the filler cap is below highest spot? Does is suck from the overflow tank to add the extra amount?

well you fill to the base of the radiator neck and then do the proper bleed procedure, after that is done you will likely add a bit more fluid to top it off. It will suck from the overflow tank but only after the system is properly bled and free of all air pockets.

Oh, thanks. Missed the part with the overflow tank, thought it only worked as a "spit cup" and removed it.

It's more of a spit and suck effect.

Fill the overlow tank to full cold level before the fill and bleed procedure. After the rad has been filled, bled, topped off, the overflow tank should be topped to the full hot level as the last part of the procedure so the entire system is at the full level.

Great, will probably work fine on the V-mount setup as well. Always nice to know how things work before modding them.
My older cars had a reservoir inline with the system and a bit easier to work on since it was mounted on the highest spot and removed the air by itself.

This is a sealed system and the overflow tank doesn't vent. It can be tricky to bleed all of the air out and the engine gets very upset if any air is left in the system.
