I know you mean well, but I don't want to shift like that. One of the strong selling points of the car for me is the quick, smooth, short throw shifter. If I have to stop in neutral for a second, why would I bother to run it up to Vtec in first gear at all? I will lose any acceleration advantage by waiting for a second before shifting to second. Your fix takes the fun out of both first and second gear. If that is the solution, my car will be for sale soon.

The bottom line here is there is something wrong with these trannys and we are all better off if we can find a solution short of a rebuild. I didn't buy this thing to shift it like a granny.
well...

there isn't a fix. the tranny oil isn't really a fix either, its a temporary AID...that will go away very fast...5-10K miles as you've experienced, so have I.

the solution for the weak diff and launching was to stop launching.

my advice is to save your tranny on 1 to 2 shift.

if you really want to HAVE FUN...take your car to the track, you will only do the 1-2 shift ONCE...the entire track you'll be in 2nd gear or higher.

I did them both Bill.

Current fluid has about 10,000 miles on it.
Bleed that $hit again as 10k miles is a lot of miles on the clutch fluid on a car like this if your experiancing rough shifting.

That remind's me, I need to perform a thorough flush of my clutch.

The clutch should alway's be fully dis-engaged to perform smooth gear change's.

The clutch pedal need only be depressed far enough to disengage the clutch. Many race prep shops will install small blocks under the clutch pedal to shorten the distance between the top and the bottom of the clutch pedal travel distance to save time when shifting. That said, even with full depression I am getting a grind in the 1st to second Vtec shift.

Yeah, I'm going to change the hydraulic fluid again and adjust the rod again and chamge the tranny fluid again. I might as well do all of that while I have the car up in the air.

I've noticed that 2nd gear does get "crunchier" after 10-15k or so on the GM FM fluid and changing the fluid makes it go away. I agree with the "worse when hot" symptom, though my "grind" problem is very, very minor. Even at it's worst it only happens if I make a mistake (wait...did I say that?) and most of the time it's just a "hint" of a grind, not a full-on "Oh Sh!t" grind.

I've only done a clutch fluid change once though I've adjusted the clutch twice in 200k. Maybe I drive like a wuss - no, that can't be it, my tire life is too short for wussy driving. .

Has anyone had experience where they rebuilt the transmission and the crunch totally went away after the rebuilt, or came back?

Bill, I just don't know. Apparently there is some variance from car to car, as well as from one driver to the next, and the only thing I feel I have to share is my own experience. I never used anything other than Honda MTF in my car, and started out changing it every other oil change (oil at 3,000 and other fluids at 6,000). Now that I have the KAAZ and we have to change the diff oil at every oil change we just go ahead and throw in fresh MTF at the same time. Avoiding a grind when the trans is cold has always required some modfied shift timing, but the car has always shifted perfectly once the trans warmed up. I *believe* I could feel a difference with the fresh MTF when we were changing it at 6,000 miles, but it was a small difference and may have just been my imagination. I do know that the shifting deteroriates after that, because I tried to go 12k between changes onece and didn't make it. I can't remember for sure, but I think it was at about 10k that the shifting got bad enough for me to give up on the idea of a 12k change interval.

To summarize, using a 6k change interval, I've had no shifting issues other than when the trans is cold, so at least in some cases the solution is simply to change the transmission oil more frequently.

I don't blame the car, because I drive it so hard and don't expect the oils to last as long as the factory recommends for either normal or severe use. Not to say that it is never the car, but in my case I think the short oil life is primarly a function of the way my car is driven.

I have the same problem on my 02. Changing out my fluids to new Honda MTF, Valvoline Syn, and Mobil 1 gear oil in the back this weekend. Hope it fixes my problems. Mine tends to happen when Im hard shifting from first into second, if im at about 7+ RPM, and it usually only does it once, and then its fine.

I have the same problem with MY01. Except mine tends to happen when I'm just driving for about 5 mins or less. I've noticed it alot more now. I'm still fairly new at this so please don't flame me too much. Could it also be that my clutch is slipping and I need a new one? I currently have over 138000 kms on my car.......

Any help greatly appreciated!
