Serious lag in VTEC and a sluggish powerband

Started checking mine at 200 miles - just rolled 600 (VTEC time!).
Took me 5 minutes to find the dipstick - they blended it into the top of the motor pretty good. (OK, it was a bit dark, so I couldn't quite make out the little picture on the top)
Seems like all smaller motors these days burn some oil - the last car (Saturn SC) went through @ 1 quart between changes (drove it for 200,000 miles and it's still going as far as I know)
