shake "rattle" and then roll....
Ok im familiar with pretty much every noise these cars are capable of producing. But this one has still got me....Put your car in any gear you choose, hold the brake and slowly let up on the clutch to induce a shake ....now imagine metal cigar tube with a ball bearing in it. Shake it as fast as you could ...and thats it. Doesent matter how many cigars you smoke its always there. I could easily drive around this sound but whenever the idle dips this annoying cheap sound is always there. Ive checked everything visable and with a steth. Could it be the springs on the disk moving around? something sloppy in the trans? like end play on the cluster gear or something? I dont think its the disk because if i dip the idle and hold the clutch it still does it.WTF?? Id feel better if i knew what it was....thats the part that gets me, anyone out there experience this rattle or whatever? Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks
You are applying load to the engine when it can't speed up to counteract it with torque. The rpms are dipping to the point where you are LUGGING the engine. The sound you are hearing is the engine starting to knock and ping. It is struggling to keep from stalling out. STOP DOING THIS! There is nothing to check. You are the cause of this noise. If anything, check yourself and ask why you would punish an engine in this fashion.
HELLOOOO! IS ANYBODY HOME???

sorry xsviper but you are wrong. I know the lugging pinging noise you are talking about and thats not what im experiencing here. This is something thats loose and /or moving . You gonna tell me if i blip the throttle as the engine dips below 1000 rpm in neutaral with no-load on it im experiencing detonation?....this is play, slop, or wear somewhere where its not supposed to be....it didnt always make this sound as pronounced as is does now...its getting worse. I can duplicate the shake by holding the brake and slightly dropping the rpm. Thats where you hear it most pronounced.

RED, thanks for the patience to explain it a bit further. At extremely low rpm, even with supposedly no "load", the engine itself is its own load. It can't give enough power strokes to keep itself running smoothly. It does still knock and ping, but the violence of the engine movement when it almost dies is going to mask out the knock. What's happening is that he's shaking the crap out of the engine. Blipping the throttle at certain times will take the rpm much below idle. This is a very commonly reported trait of this engine. Blipping can confuse the ECU during these kinds of conditions where it has a hard time recovering the falling rpm. Refraining from blipping when sitting still will allow the ECU to learn and compensate.
It's bad enough that it does it on its own. It's much worse to apply the brakes and let the clutch out and do it on purpose.
