Default Shift Knob Locked On

Alright, here is what I did. Rather than drilling out the stock shift knob to allow it to sit lower, I removed the set screw, and put a little red Loctite to keep it in place. Well...I decided to buy an aftermarket shift knob knowing it wasn't going to be easy to take the stock knob off. Needless to say the knob hasn't come off yet. Red Loctite usually comes off with a little heat and some tools. I used two sets of large mouth plyers, one to hold the shifter, and the other to hold the knob. I heated the knob until it was extremely hot. I'd like to think I'm a pretty strong guy, but this thing won't budge.

How hard is it to remove the shifter? I haven't taken the console apart yet to check it out.

Anyone has any ideas. I pretty much massacred the stock shift knob, so it has to come off now. I was trying to be careful that I didn't twist the shifter too much while trying to remove the knob. I assume I could bend the shift linkage if I'm not careful.

Any suggestions other than I shouldn't have used Loctite?

Take at look at http://www.ricks2k.com/products/shortshifter.php There is an installation guide (link), that is a step by step on removing the shifter.

Good luck.

He loctite'd his OEM know w/ red loctite.

I knew I'd get flamed for this one. I done this on several other cars. Remove the set screw, add a little Red Loctite, and the shift knob will sit lower. I used the Red stuff from Napa this time. I've always used the Loctite branded stuff before. I guess the Napa stuff is a lot stronger or maybe I put too much on the threads. If you don't put Loctite on the shifter and knob, the shift pattern is off center. I wanted to remove the shifter to allow me to put it in a vice and heat the crap out of it. I ended up removing the center console. That allowed me to get my vice grips lower on the shafter giving me more leverage. It then came right off.

dude no sweat....i did the exact same thing w/ except mine was blue loctite lol....it really would not budge with heat that was strong enough to burn through my hand and everything.....the solution was call a friend over and somehow her miraculously got it off....he didn't tell me everything he did, but he taped the knob w/ duct tape (probably to save it from sratches something you don't have to worry about, but try it cause it may give you more grip) and a good pair of channel locks....hope this helps dude...i feel for ya believe me....i was also considering removing the shifter but that would have meant that i had to cut the boot as well....try the channel locks cause that's how my buddy got mine off....be persistent it will come off

Money2536, Loctite Red is not "service removeable," it typically requires power tools or heat to remove the fastener. Loctite Blue (242) is "service removeable" and is what you should have used.

I did end up destroying the perfectly good stock knob in the ordeal. Oh well. I was just frustrated that a 30 second change, turned into an unplanned 2 hour project.
