It's in the manual, actually.

For the good of the group the answer is about 3200 rpm. The manual lists the MPH at which you should shift in each gear. I tried this and came up with about 3200 rpm before shifting into the next higher gear.

Seriously, you gotta save money on gas when you are commuting so you can afford changing the tires every 10K miles!

But when I do want maximum mileage I drive my Civic.

wouldn't the best shift point be that when you shift into the next gear you are going as slow as you can without lugging the engine?

In theory yes, but I was basing my answer on the Honda manual.

In my normal-driving mode, I usually shift into the next higher gear every 10 mph.

For instance, 1st to 2nd at 20 mph, 2nd to 3rd at 30 mph, 3rd to 4th at 40 mph, 4th to 5th at 50 mph, 5th to 6th at 60 mph. It's fairly close to what Honda states in the manual and is easy to remember.

I usually get about 26 mpg with mixed driving using this technique. I could get better mileage but sometimes the revs want to hit 9000 rpm before I shift. Imagine that!
